அதிராத குரல், நிதானம் தவறாத அணுகுமுறை, எல்லோரையும் அரவணைத்துக் கொண்டு போகும் பாங்கு, பார்வையற்றவர்களுடைய உரிமைகளுக்காகவும், நலவாழ்வுக்காகவும் ஓயாமல் உழைக்கும் ஆர்வம், மன உறுதி, பார்வையுள்ளவர்கள் பார்வையற்றவர்களுக்கு எதிரி என்று பாவிக்காத மனத்தெளிவும், புரிதலும் கொண்ட பண்பு, அறிவைப் பெருக்கிக்கொள்வதில் சலிக்காத தேடலும் ஆர்வமும், எல்லோரிடத்தும் அன்பு பாராட்டும் மனம் – இன்னும் எத்தனையெத்தனை மனித மாண்புகள் உண்டோ அத்தனைக்கும் சொந்தக்காரராக சொல்லத்தக்க எங்கள் அன்புக்குரிய ஜெயராமன் சார் இன்று இல்லை. வயிற்றில் சிறு கட்டி வந்திருப்பதாகத் தெரியவந்து மருத்துவமனையில் நான்கைந்து மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பு அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டவர் வீடுவந்த பின் திரவ உணவையே உட்கொண்டுவந்தார். இந்த மாதம் மறுபடியும் வயிற்றில் உபாதை காரணமாக மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டு தீவிர சிகிச்சைப் பிரிவில் ஒரு வார காலம் இருந்தவர் கடந்த 25ஆம் தேதி இரவு அமரராகிவிட்டார்.

ஆனால், உண்மையில் அவர் அமரத்துவம் பெற்றவர். பார்வையற்றவர்களுக்கும் சரி, பார்வையுள்ளவர்களுக்கும் சரி, அவர் ஒரு மிகச்சிறந்த வழிகாட்டி என்பதை அவரையறிந்த எல்லோருமே ஒப்புக் கொள்வார்கள். சக மனிதர்களை அவர்களுடைய சமூக, பொருளாதார அந்தஸ்தை சிறிதும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் மதித்து நடத்துபவர். யாரையும் மனம் சுருங்கச் செய்யலாகாது என்ற கொள்கை கொண்டவர். பிறரை மதிப்பழிப்பதே, மேலாதிக்கம் செலுத்துவதே தம்முடைய மேலாண் மையாக உலாவும் பகட்டு மனிதர்களிடையே ஜெயராமன் சாரிடம் பேசிக்கொண்டிருப்பது பொருளார்ந்த அனுபவமாய் நிறைவளிக்கும்.

பிறரைப்பழித்தோ,கேலிசெய்தோ ஒருவார்த்தையும் அவர்பேசியதில்லை. ஆக்கபூர்வ மான, உத்வேகம் அளிக்கும்படியான ஆலோசனைகளையும், அறிவுரைகளையும் தந்து எத்தனையோ பேருடைய வாழ்க்கையை சீரமைத்துத் தந்தவர் ஜெயராமன் சார். இலக்கியவுலகில் புழங்கும் காரணத்தால் பார்வையற்றவர்களின் பிரச்னைகளையும், திறன்களையும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் எழுத்தாக்கங்களையும், பார்வையற்றவர்களின் படைப்பாக்கத்திறனை வெளிப்படுத்தும் எழுத்தாக்கங்களையும் நம்முடைய சங்கத்தின் மூலம் வெளியிடலாமே என்று சாரிடம் கேட்டுக்கொண்டபோது உடனடியாக அதற்கு ஒப்புதல் அளித்தார். அதுமுதல் கடந்த சில வருடங்களாய் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டு விழாவின் போதும் அத்தகைய நூல்கள் சிலவற்றை வெளியிட்டு வருவதை வழக்கப் படுத்திக் கொண்டோம். கடந்த ஏழெட்டு வருடங்களில் அவ்வாறு ஏறத்தாழ இருபது நூல்கள் வெளியிட்டிருக்கிறோம். சமீபத்தில் சந்தியா பதிப்பகம் வெளியிட்டுள்ள ‘மொழிபெயர்ப்பின் சவால்கள்’ என்ற நூலில் இடம்பெறும் கட்டுரைகள் அவரும் நானும் ஆளுக்கு ஆறு என்ற அளவில் மொழிபெயர்த்தவை. எத்தனை ஆர்வமாக குறித்த நேரத்தில் முடித்துக்கொடுத்துவிட்டார் ஜெயராமன் சார் என்று எண்ணியெண்ணி வியந்திருக்கிறேன்.

கவிஞர் கோ.கண்ணனின் கவிதைத்தொகுப்பு போன்றவற்றை நாங்கள் வெளியிட்டதைத் தொடர்ந்து வேறு சில பதிப்பகங்களும் பார்வையற்றவர்களின் படைப்பாக்கங்களை வெளியிட முன்வந்தன. கோ.கண்ணனின் இரண்டாவது கவிதைத்தொகுப்பான மழைக்குடை நாட்களை நவீன விருட்சம் பதிப்பகம் வெளியிட்டது. அதேபோல் மு.ரமேஷ் என்பவரின் கவிதைத்தொகுப்பான மழையில் நனையும் ’இரவின் வாசனை’யை புதுப்புனல் பதிப்பகம் வெளியிட முன்வந்தது. தவிர, பார்வையற்ற மற்றும் பார்வையுள்ள படைப்பாளிகள், மொழிபெயர்ப்பாளர்கள் இணைந்து பங்கேற்ற ஒரு மொழிபெயர்ப்புப் பட்டறை, கவிதை வாசிப்பு நிகழ்வு என ஒருங்கிணைந்த முயற்சிகளும் எங்கள் சங்கத்தில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டன. வருடா வருடம் ‘பார்வை யற்றவர்களின் நண்பன்’[FRIENDS OF THE BLIND] என்ற விருதை எங்கள் சங்கம் அளித்துவருகிறது. இவ் வாறு பார்வையற்றவர்களின் எழுத்தாக்கங்களை வெளியிட்ட பதிப்பகங்களுக்கும் இந்த விருதுகள் வழங்கப் பட்டுள்ளன.

திரு.ஜெயராமனின் மனைவி வசந்தா அவருடைய பார்வையாகச் செயல்பட்டவர் என்றால் மிகையாகாது. ஜெயராமன் சாருக்கும் சங்கத் திற்கும் உறுதுணையாக பக்கபலமாகத் திகழ்ந்தவர். பார்வையற் றவர்களுடைய பிரச்னைகள், திறமைகள் குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வைப் பரவலாக்கும் முயற்சியில் ஜெயராமன் சார் மேற்கொண்ட பயணங்கள், செயல்பாடுகள் அனைத்திலும் அவரை அழைத்துக்கொண்டுபோவது முதல் அத்தனை வேலைகளிலும் துணைநிற்பவர். தவிர, பார்வை யற்றவர்கள் அத்தனை பேரிடமும் ஆத்மார்த்தமாக அன்புசெலுத்துபவர். சாருடைய இரண்டு மகள்கள், ஒரு மகன் மூவரும் பார்வையுடையவர்கள். அப்பாவிடம் அன்பும் மதிப்பும் நிறைந்தவர்கள்.

சில பேரைப் பார்த்தாலே மனம் அமைதி பெறும்; உறுதிபெறும்; பக்குவமடையும். ஜெயராமன் சார் அத்தகையவர். அவரைப் பற்றிய சிறுகுறிப்பு கீழே தரப்பட்டுள்ளது.

13.05.1934இல் பிறந்தவர் திரு.ஜி.ஜெயராமன். தந்தை பெயர் திரு.T.K.கோபால ஐயர். திருமதி நாகலட்சுமி அம்மாள். எட்டு வயதில், ஒரு சமயம் காய்ச்சல் ஏற்பட்டதில், எதனால் என்றே தெரியாமல் அவருக்கு முழுமையாக பார்வை பறி போய்விட்டது. எத்தனையோ மருந்து மாத்திரைகள், சிகிச்சைகள் அளித்தும் பயனில்லை. பார்வையிழப்பு அவருடைய பள்ளிப் படிப்புக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி இட்டுவிட்டது.

வீட்டிலேயே அவருடைய தந்தையின் ஊக்கத்தாலும் விடாமுயற்சியாலும் கல்வி பயின்று வந்த சிறுவன் ஜெயராமன் பின்னர் பூவிருந்தவல்லி பார்வையற்றோர் பள்ளியில் சேர்ந்து ஒரே வருடத்தில் ESLC தேர்வும், இசை உயர்படிவத் தேர்வும் எழுதி தேர்ச்சி பெற்று விட்டான். சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கணிதமும், அறிவியலும் முதன்மைப் பாடப் பிரிவுகளாகக் கொண்டு மெட்ரிகுலேஷன் தேர்வெழுதி அதன்பின் தாம்பரம் கிறிஸ்தவக் கல்லூரியில் அதே பாடப் பிரிவுகளில் பயின்று மிகச் சிறந்த மதிப்பெண்களோடு P.U.C-யில் தேர்ச்சி பெற்றார். பின் ஆங்கில இலக்கியத்தில் சென்னைக் கிறித்துவக் கல்லூரியில் இளங்கலைப் பட்டமும், முதுகலைப்பட்டமும் பெற்றார்.

பார்வையற்றவர்களுக்குக் கல்வி கற்பிக்க வேண்டும் என்ற பேரார்வத்தால் உந்தப்பட்டவராய் பாஸ்டன் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பெர்க்கின்ஸ் கல்வி நிறுவனத்தில் அதற்¢குரிய சிறப்புப் பயிற்சி கற்றார். பின், பிரிட்டிஸ் கௌன்ஸி’வால் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்ட அறிஞர் என்ற வகையில் இரண்டு மாதங்கள் இங்கிலாந்தில் பயணம் மேற்கொண்டு அங்கேயுள்ள பார்வையற்றோருக்கான நலப்பணிகள் குறித்து ஆய்ந்தறிந்தார்.

பார்வையற்றோர் பள்ளியில் இரண்டு வருடகாலம் கற்பித்த பின் பாளையங்கோட்டையிலுள்ள Pilot Demonstration Rehabilitation Centre for the Blindல் கண்காணிப்பாளரால் பணிபுரிந்தார். அங்கு மூன்று வருடகாலம் பணிபுரிந்த பின் தாம்பரம் கிறித்துவக் கல்லூரியில் வேலைக்கு சேர்ந்தார். ஏறத்தாழ 20 வருடங்களுக்கும் மேல் அங்கே ஆங்கிலத் துறையில் பேராசிரியராக சீரிய முறையில் பணியாற்றியவர் 1992ல் வேலையிலிருந்து ஒய்வு பெற்றார்.

தனது மாணவர் பருவத்திலிருந்தே பார்வையற்றோருக்கான மறுவாழ்வுப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்வதில் டாக்டர் ஜெயராமனுக்கு மிகுந்த ஈடுபாடு இருந்தது. கிறித்துவக் கல்லூரியில் பார்வையற்ற மாணவர்களுக்கான வாசிப்பு மையம் உருவாகக் காரணமாக இருந்தவர். அதன் செயலாளரா கவும் பின்னர் கல்லூரியில் பணிபுரிந்த காலத்தில் அதன் உப – தலைவ ராகவும் செயல்பட்டார். திரு. கே.எம்.ராமசாமி, திரு. ஆசிர் நல்லதம்பி ஆகியோருடன் இணைந்து 60களின் பிற்பகுதிகளில் Tamil Nadu Association of the Blind ( TAB) என்ற அமைப்பை உருவாக்கினார்.

தமிழ்நாட்டிலேயே பார்வையற்றுருக்காகத் தொடங்கப்பட்ட முதல் அமைப்பு இதுவாகும். Natinonal Federation of the Blind என்ற அமைப்பின் தமிழகக் கிளையின் உபதலைவராகவும் செயலாற்றியுள்ள திரு. ஜெயராமன், அவ்வமயம் அந்தச் சங்கம் வெளியிட்டு வந்த ‘ பார்வையற்றோர் குரல்’ என்ற பத்திரிக்கையின் முதன்மை ஆசிரிய ராகவும் இயங்கி வந்தார். National Federation of the Blind India-வின் வெளியீடான ‘ Visionary ‘ என்ற ஆங்கில இதழின் ஆசிரியர் குழுவிலும் இடம் பெற்றிருந்தார். தமிழில் ‘ Braille Contractions ‘ உருவாக்கும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த திரு.ஜெயராமன் தமிழக அரசின் State Resource Centre தொடர்ச்சியாகத் தயாரித்த ப்ரெய்ல் புத்தகங்களின் உருவாக்கத்திலும் சீரிய பங்காற்றினார்.

பதினைந்து வயதிருக்கும்போது ஒரு விபத்து காரணமாய் திரு. ஜெயராமனின் இடது கால் அகற்றப்பட வேண்டியதாகியது. படுக்கையில் இருந்தபடியே ‘கண்ணன்’ என்ற சிறுவர் பத்திரிகைக்கு ஒரு சிறுகதை எழுதி அனுப்பி வைத்தார். அதற்கு பரிசும் கிடைத்தது. அதன் பின்னர் அதே பத்திரிகையில் அவருடைய 50க்கும் மேற்பட்ட சிறுகதைகள் வெளியாயின. 1956இல் கண்ணன் பத்திரிகை நடத்திய தொடர்கதைப் போட்டியில் முதல் பரிசு பெற்றார்.

அவருடைய ‘ மஞ்சள் பங்களா ‘, ‘ இரட்டைக் கிளி ‘ ஆகிய இரண்டு குறுநாவல்கள் அதே இதழில் பிரசுரமாகி கணிசமான வரவேற்பைப் பெற்றன.

பார்வையற்றோர் குறித்த திரு.ஜெயராமனின் ஆய்வுத் தாள்களில் அவர் அமெரிக்காவில் இருந்த போது எழுதிய

1) ‘ Schools for the Blind in Madras State ‘ (சென்னை மாநிலத்தில் பார்வையற்றோருக்காள பள்ளிகள்).

2) IGNOU செயல் திட்டத்திற்காக எழுதிய ‘ Distance Education in the Education of the Blind’(பார்வையற்றோருக்கான கல்வியில் தொலைதூரக் கல்வி)

3) Vision என்ற தலைப்பிட்ட ஆங்கில படைப்பு (குறுநாவல்) IGNOU செயல் திட்டத்திற்காக எழுதப்பட்டது.

4) The Effect of Visual Handicap on Creative Writing (படைப்பாற்றலில் பார்வையிழப்பின் தாக்கம் ) என்ற தலைப்பிட்ட முனைவர் பட்ட ஆய்வேடு

5) ‘காணாத உலகில் கேளாத குரல்கள்’ என்ற தலைப்பில் பார்வையற்றோரின் பிரச்சினைகள், அவர்கள் சந்திக்கும் சவால்கள் குறித்து எழுதப்பட்ட நூல் – முதலியவை குற்ப்பிடத்தக்கன.

1991இல் Welfare Foundation of the Blind என்ற ‘ பார்வையற்றோர் நன்நல அமைப்பை நிறுவினார். படித்த பார்வைக்குறையுடையவர்களை முக்கியப் பதவிகளில் கொண்டுள்ள இந்தச் சங்கம் பார்வையற்றோரின் பிரச்சினைகள், திறனாற்றல்கள் குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வை சமூகத்தில் பரவலாக்குதல், பார்வையற்றோருக்குத் தேவையான ஆலோசனைகளை யும், வழிகாட்டுதல்களையும் வழங்குதல், பார்வையற்றோருக்கான பிற அமைப்புகளோடு இணைந்து மேம்பாட்டுப் பணிகளை மேற்கொள்ளுதல் முதலிய பல்வேறு நோக்கங்களையும், செயல்பாடுகளையும் கொண்டு இயங்கிவருகிறது. இந்த அமைப்பு டாக்டர் ஜெயராமனின் வழிகாட்ட லில் கடந்த பத்தொன்பது ஆண்டுகளாக சீரிய முறையில் இயங்கி வருகிறது.

கர்நாடக இசையில் ஆர்வமும், தேர்ச்சியும் பெற்றவர். டாக்டர் ஜெயராமன். அருமையாக புல்லாங்குழல் இசைப்பார். 1992ஆம் வருடம் Best Handicapped Employee என்ற தேசிய விருதைப் பெற்றார்.

A group of visually challenged friends met on a holiday in January 1991 and discussed what they could do to help their visually challenged brothers and sisters. They felt that a strong foundation is needed in matters of Awareness, Individual Help and Total Co-operation . Thus WELFARE FOUNDATION OF THE BLIND came into being, to provide for these needs.

The Founder-President of W.F.B is Dr.G.Jayaraman.

The Chief Patron is His Excellency, the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

We are affiliated to ALL INDIA CONFEDERATION OF THE BLIND and

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF THE BLIND (INDIA).

1)       

Aims and Objectives:

·         To create awareness about the Plights and Potentials of the Visually Challenged.

·         To close the divide between the Sighted and the Sightless.

·         To provide counselling and Guidance to the Visually Challenged.

·         To create Integration, Co-operation and Co-ordination among all the Organizations For and Of the Visually Challenged.

·         To work in unison and to co-operate with the Government in uplifting the visually challenged.

·         To provide platform for the creative talents of the visually challenged.

Activities :

Working towards realizing our aims and objectives we have undertaken and are undertaking various activities which we hope would bring positive changes in the lives of the visually challenged.

Some of our important and on-going activities are :

I     We have conducted Seminars on the following topics:

a)       Self-Employment for the Visually Challenged.

b)       The Role of the Visually Challenged Women in Welfare work.

c)       Exploring New Areas of Employment.

d)       Some Psychological Problems of the Visually Challenged.

e)       Music as a Profession for the Visually Challenged.

f)        Literary Introduction to the Visually Challenged.

Altogether, we have so far conducted around 20 Seminars.

II We have conducted ‘Awareness Exhibitions’ highlighting the Plights and Potentials of the Visually Challenged. Twice we have participated in Informex Exhibition conducted by the Students Career Guidance Bureau in 1991 and 1993 and on both the occasions we have won First Prize for the Best Stall.

III We have so far conducted two Study Projects which are :-

1)      A Home for the Visually Challenged Senior Citizens.

2)      ) An Integrated Training Programme for the visually Challenged and Poor Rural Women.

_This Integrated System has created the much-needed awareness in working with the ‘seeing’.

IV  Awards and Prizes:-

1)      We have instituted two prizes for the Visually Challenged students of the Chennai-based three Schools for the visually challenged and another for Education and Training.They are

a) Sundararajan Memorial Award

b) Manikandan Memorial Award.

This year, as a token of our love and respect for Prof.Vishnu Bhatt, who recently passed away and who had done a lot for the cause of the Visually Challenged, we are going to institute Prof.vishnu Bhatt Memorial Award which we would be giving every year.

2)      We have given Awards to the following:

a)       Outstanding Workers Award for the Visually Challenged.

b)       Nine Gems Award representing nine Visually Challenged persons engaged in non-conventional job activities and they include an Astrologer, a Businessman, an L.I.C Agent, a small Industrialist, a Gas Agent, a Lawyer, a Music Composer and so on.

This has created the much needed positive feeling that no profession is beyond the reach of the Visually Challenged, if there is determination in them and if proper opportunities are provided.

We have honoured ten couples of whom one is Visually Challenged for leading a successful married life for a period of twenty years.

c)       Seeing parents who have properly settled their three Visually Challenged children were honoured by our Organization.

d)        Visually Challenged writers were honoured.

e)       ‘Friends of the Blind’ Awards are annually given by us to those who are of constant support to the cause of the Visually Challenged.

V  Publications:

In order to create the much needed awareness about the Visually Challenged we have published several works on and by the Visually Challenged. They are :

a)       THE UNHEARD VOICES OF THE NON-SEEING -  a collection of essays on the various stages of the Visually Challenged starting from Birth. This book is written by Dr.G.Jayaraman.

b)       KAANAADHA ULAGIL KELAADHA KURALGAL – The collection of essays mentioned above in Tamil.

c)       MARUPAARVAI _ a collection of brief life-sketches of twenty Visually Challenged persons.

d)       A COLLECTION OF TAMIL SONGS SET TO TUNE- by Mr.Venkatasubramanian, a  Visually Challenged Music Teacher.

e)       OESAIGALIN NIRAMAALAI – a collection of Poems in Tamil written by Prof.G.Kannan, a Visually Challenged poet.

f)        OOTRUKANGAL – A collection of prize-winning short-stories penned by Visually Challenged students and adults. The competition was conducted by Welfare Foundation of the Blind.

g)       THE STATE OF SCHOOLS FOR THE VISUALLY CHALLENGED IN MADRAS STATE – written by Dr.G.Jayaraman.

h)       THARKAALA THAMIZH KAVIDHAIGAL – a collection of some 50 contemporary Tamil Poems in Braille.

Apart from our own publications we have also been instrumental in getting the works of several aspiring visually challenged creative writers, printed. Sticky propositionThe system devised by the researchers uses molecules to representfacts and rules. In this way, the team was able to use it to answersimple molecular "questions".First, they tried the system with simple "if? then?" propositions. One of these went as follows: "All men are mortal. Socrates is a man.Therefore, Socrates is mortal."Without computer robotic support to this process, we would not havefinished this in our lifetime Professor Ehud Shapiro Weizmann Institute of ScienceWhen fed a molecular rule (all men are mortal) and a molecular fact(Socrates is a man), the DNA computing system was able to answer the question "Is Socrates mortal?" correctly.The team went on to set up more complicated queries involving multiple rules and facts. The DNA devices were able to deduce the correct answers every time.The answer was encoded in a flash of green light. Some of the DNAstrands were equipped with a naturally glowing fluorescent moleculebound to a second molecule which keeps the light covered.A specialised enzyme, attracted to the part of the moleculerepresenting the correct answer, would then remove this cover to letthe light shine.Life's workProfessor Shapiro said the fact this system was based on cleverbiochemistry meant it was no less a computer than the conventionalkind."Of course when the examples are simple, as in today's logic program,one can pre-compute the answer with pencil and paper. The robotic "compiler" can then turn those facts and rules intothe DNA starting products of a logical query."We had to do many, many experiments to develop, debug, and calibrate the molecular computing system, and without computer robotic support to this process, we would not have finished this in our lifetime," Professor Shapiro said.While the current work may raise the bar for programmable, molecular computing, Professor Shapiro said: "the ultimate applications are in programmable autonomouscomputing devices that can operate in a biological environment."In other words, computers that go to work inside a cell.

Star rating tied to safety, security at hotels Care For Physically Challenged A Must; New Norms To Come Into Effect By Sept '10 HOTELS will get star ratings only if they are hospitable for disabled persons and have adequate arrangement for safety and security of guests, said a tourism ministry statement. Until now, hotels provided these facilities on voluntary basis. All star-rated hotels across the country will have to meet the new requirements by September next year, said the statement. Hotels in India are rated between one-star and fivestar deluxe on the basis of facilities they offer to the guests. As per the new guidelines issued by the tourism ministry for star-rated hotels, they are required to verify credentials of their staff by the police. "Depending on the star-category, hotels will now have to put up metal detectors, close circuit cameras, x-ray machines and under belly scanners to screen vehicles," said a tourism ministry official. The new norms have, however, relaxed rules for food & beverages for three to fourstar hotels. "Even midmarket and lower midmarket hotels were expected to have multiple restaurants, banquet hotels and similar facilities. This has now been rationalised," said Sarovar Hotels ED Ajay Bakaya. One to four-star hotels, availing subsidy and tax benefits from the govt, will not be able to upgrade their status for a minimum of eight years. "Hotels would be permitted to apply for upgradation after the completion of the eightyear lock-in period," said the ministry statement. The government last reviewed the guidelines for hotel classification norm in 2003. It has decided to revise the guidelines due to changing requirements of travellers and ensure safety and security of guests due to growing terror threats. The new guidelines encourage hotels to adopt eco-friendly practices such as rain-water harvesting, waste management and sewage treatment plant. The set of new rules require hotels to provide Indian system of treatments such as ayurvedic and yoga.
